The Brera area is one of the nerve centers of Milan’s nightlife. The historic streets are home to dozens of restaurants, clubs, pubs and much more all in the shadow of the wonderful Palazzo di Brera.

The construction of the Palazzo di Brera began in 1651 by Francesco Maria Ricchini over an ancient fourteenth century convent of the order of the Humiliati. The works for the construction were completed in 1773 and in 1780 Giuseppe Piermarini completed some additions by adding a huge portal. Inside the rectangular courtyard of Palazzo Brera, consisting of arches on twin columns, there is a bronze statue depicting Napoleon I as pacifying Mars. The work created in Rome in the nineteenth century is attributed to Antonio Canova. Later, the decision was made to allocate some areas of the building including courtyards, loggias, corridors and halls, as places to remember and commemorate artists, benefactors, men of culture and science. Among the noteworthy sculptures are the monument to Cesare Beccaria di Pompeo Marchesi and that of Gaetano Monti to Giuseppe Parini. Nowadays, in the solid late Baroque Lombard palace, there are many cultural institutions such as the Brera Art Gallery, the Academy of Fine Arts, the Braidense National Library, the Astronomical Observatory, the Botanical Garden and the Lombard Institute of Sciences.
